Oaxaca & the Pacific
Oaxaca Tours February 6th to February 13th.
Oaxaca: the Pacific Ocean beaches, twisty mountains, bioluminescent lagoons, surf camp, fishing, turtle release, Indigenous culture trip 8 nights.
Thursday Day1 – no riding You arrive in Oaxaca City! We are staying at a women owned hotel that offers cooking classes as well as food and mezcal tours. If you get in early, there are a ton of things to do. We will be staying just a short distance from the Zocalo so you can visit the markets or catch a ride up to the pyramid Monte Albán, the ceremonial center of the Oaxacan Valley. Later that night there will be an arrival reception at their hotel, snacks, drinks, and dinner prepared by our host.
Friday Day 2 – 3 hours riding We will start every day with breakfast and a quick talk about the day ahead, a ride safety meeting, as well as any other tips for riding. We will throw all our gear in the chase truck and hit the “new road” to Puerto Escondido through the mountains to the Pacific Coast. Puerto has a lot to offer, and you will be free to do whatever you want this first night on the coast. At sunset we encourage you to join us at Playa Bacocho to release the baby sea turtles in the surf, it’s just too cute.
Saturday Day 3 – 1.5 hours riding After breakfast you can do some shopping and then we will make our way north to the embarcadero across from our next destination. Make the most of your morning in Puerto, then enjoy the quick ride up the coast.
We have a plan to get our bikes across the lagoon to the beach island of Chacahua where we will stay for the next two nights. The ocean is at our doorstep. No surprise the seafood is great and the sunsets and phenomenal.
Sunday Day 4 – no riding Chill day. Chacahua Island is a make your own adventure day. Wanna go fishing in the ocean or lagoon? How about a surfing lesson? A coconut drink and a hammock on the beach? We got you. We have arranged for the moon to take the night off (jk it’s the new moon) so you can swim in the bioluminescent lagoon – it is like moving the stars with your hands so be prepared to join us after dark for an evening that will be nothing short of magical.
Monday Day 5 – 2.5 hours riding Shake off the sand and get back on the bikes for a ride down the coast to Mazunte. We will stop off in Puerto for lunch on our way, visiting La Punta Zicatela, feel free to take a dip in the ocean to cool off before we drive the rest of the way. Playa Mazunte sits with two others, Playa San Agustinillo, and Playa Zipolite, offering everything you could want. Seafood, palapa days at the beach, and an ocean front hotel. We will be here for two nights, so if you want to take an excursion to another beach or just hang out at Playa Mazunte, it is up to you.
Tuesday Day 6 – no riding/optional 2 hours ride Chill day. We will organize a coastal ride if you want to join us for a half day outing to see where the international surfers go call Playa El Mojon, or you can go on your own to Playa Zipolite, Mexico’s official nude beach (we won’t tell), the world is your oyster. Oaxaca is lined with remote beaches that can feel like you are the only person in the world, or you can be in the middle of it all. Just have fun and make sure to enjoy the sunsets.
Wednesday Day 7 – 3.5 hours riding After a couple of days of warm weather and sunny beaches we’re going to head inland along the “old road” toward our mountain destination San Jose del Pacifico. The altitude and trees will offer a marked change from the tropical coast so be prepared to have fall-like clothing with you. The town is halfway back to Oaxaca City and makes a perfect stop for the night. Although you may not have time to partake in some of the more exotic offerings (San Jose del Pacifico is famous for psychedelic mushrooms), rest assured it will still be an evening to remember.
Thursday Day 8– 3 hours riding Wake up on a crisp morning in the mountains. Have a hot chocolate or coffee or both before we head further north along the twisty roads back to Oaxaca City to see our hosts. For this last night we have a food tour planned and hope to send you home with the memories of trying something new, like chapulines (grasshoppers), or the rich flavors of the dozens of different types of mole to be found here.
